Background of the Study
Public confidence in the news media is a cornerstone of democratic societies, influencing the credibility and effectiveness of journalism. In Jalingo Local Government Area, Taraba State, public trust in the media has been shaped by factors such as the quality of news coverage, adherence to ethical standards, and the prevalence of misinformation. While the media serves as a critical source of information and a platform for public discourse, declining public confidence due to perceived bias, sensationalism, and inaccuracies poses a threat to its role in society. Rebuilding trust requires media organizations to prioritize transparency, accountability, and ethical practices in their operations (Adebayo & Musa, 2024; Ibrahim, 2023). This study investigates the factors influencing public confidence in the news media in Jalingo and examines strategies to restore trust.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the vital role of the news media in Jalingo, public confidence in its credibility has waned, driven by concerns over biased reporting, misinformation, and unethical practices. The decline in trust undermines the media’s ability to inform, educate, and hold power accountable. However, there is limited research exploring the specific factors contributing to this loss of confidence and how they can be addressed within the local context of Jalingo (Yusuf & Bello, 2023; Suleiman, 2024). This study seeks to fill this gap by examining the relationship between media practices and public trust in Jalingo.
